Business insurance

What should I prepare for a business insurance review?

JetGo Business Solutions ·

The short answer

Prepare a clear description of your operations, locations, employees, business vehicle use, existing policies, and upcoming changes. The agency can then tell you which additional information it needs.

Describe the business as it operates today

Explain what you sell or do, where work takes place, and whether the business has changed since its last insurance review. Include new locations, new services, or work performed at customer premises.

Bring any customer or landlord insurance requirements to the conversation. Ask the agency to review the actual documents rather than assume a familiar policy name satisfies every requirement.

Bring the relevant policy information

  • Current policy types and renewal dates.
  • Available declarations pages and requested coverage limits.
  • Employee and payroll information requested by the agency.
  • Business vehicle details, drivers, and how vehicles are used.
  • Claims history or other background the agency requests.

This is a preparation list, not a complete application. Share sensitive documents only through the channel the agency designates.

Discuss coverage needs together

General liability, workers’ compensation, and commercial auto address different business exposures. One agency conversation can help coordinate those needs, but it does not mean one policy covers them all.

The Small Business Administration distinguishes common business insurance categories, including general liability and professional liability. Use that overview to prepare questions; the agency should evaluate your particular operations and policy wording. Read the SBA’s business insurance overview.

Questions for the agency

  • Which exposures does each proposed policy address?
  • What exclusions, deductibles, limits, and conditions should I understand?
  • How will changes in staffing, vehicles, services, or locations be handled?
  • What must happen before coverage takes effect?
